About Speedtest.now
A serious, transparent internet diagnostics platform. Built for users who want real answers, not just a number.
Our mission
Most speed tests give you one number and call it done. We built Speedtest.now because a single download figure tells you almost nothing about how your connection actually feels to use.
We measure what matters: download speed, upload speed, ping latency, jitter, and packet loss — all in a single test, using methodology you can read and verify. Every result is stored with a privacy-masked identifier so your data contributes to global rankings without exposing you.
What we measure
Download Speed
How fast data travels from the internet to your device. Measured in Mbps using parallel streams to saturate your connection.
Upload Speed
How fast your device sends data to the internet. Critical for video calls, file sharing, and cloud backups.
Ping / Latency
The round-trip time for a packet to travel to the server and back. Low ping is essential for gaming and real-time applications. What is a good ping? →
Jitter
The variation in ping over time. High jitter causes choppy voice calls and stuttering video, even when average ping is low. What is jitter? →
Packet Loss
The percentage of data packets that fail to reach their destination. Even 1% packet loss makes connections feel broken.
Our values
Transparency
Our entire measurement methodology is documented and public. We explain exactly how each metric is calculated, what hardware we use, and how our server network is structured. If you disagree with our approach, you can read why we made each choice. Read our methodology →
Accuracy over marketing
We use multi-threaded parallel streams to saturate your connection and report the median — not the peak — throughput. Median values are resistant to single-measurement spikes that inflate your apparent speed. We want your result to reflect reality, not look impressive.
Privacy by design
Your IP address is masked before storage. We retain a truncated version (e.g. 192.168.**.**) solely for geographic classification. Full IP addresses are never stored, never shown publicly, and never sold. Privacy Policy →
Completely free
There are no paid plans, no test limits, and no features locked behind a paywall. Creating a free account unlocks result history, competition entry, and personal statistics — nothing more is ever required.
The platform
Beyond the speed test itself, Speedtest.now aggregates anonymised results into rolling 7-day rankings by country and ISP. Rankings require a minimum of five verified samples to appear, reducing the effect of outlier tests on small populations. You can also browse all ISPs in our directory.
The weekly leaderboard runs a fresh competition every Monday, awarding a permanent Hall of Champions record to the highest verified download, upload, and ping results each week.
