Privacy Policy

What we collect

For all users (including anonymous tests)

• Test results: download speed, upload speed, ping, jitter, and packet loss values from each test you run.
• Masked IP address: the first two octets of your IP address (e.g. 192.168.**.**). We never store your full IP address.
• ISP name and ASN: detected from your IP address at the time of the test using publicly available ASN databases.
• Approximate location: country and city, derived from the same IP-based lookup. City-level data is retained for geographic ranking purposes only.
• Test metadata: timestamp, browser type, and which test server was used.

For registered users

In addition to the above, we store:

• Your email address (used for login and, if enabled, account notifications).
• Your display name (shown on leaderboards and competition results).
• A hashed password — we never store your password in plaintext.
• Your email verification status, used to gate competition entry.

What we do not collect

• Full IP addresses — masked at collection time, never stored.
• Browsing history or behaviour outside of Speedtest.now.
• Payment information — there are no paid services.
• Device identifiers, advertising IDs, or fingerprinting data.

How we use your data

Test results are used for:

• Displaying your results to you immediately after the test.
• Computing rolling 7-day country and ISP speed rankings (aggregated medians).
• Running the weekly speed competition (for verified registered users).
• Detecting and excluding fraudulent or anomalous results from rankings.

Your email address is used only for account authentication, email verification, and (if you opt in) infrequent product updates. We do not send marketing email without explicit consent.

Data sharing and third parties

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for advertising purposes. We use the following third-party services to operate the platform:

• Hosting provider: servers and database infrastructure. Bound by data processing agreements.
• Email delivery service: used only to send account verification and password reset emails.

Aggregated, anonymised statistics (e.g. median speeds by country) may be shared publicly as part of our rankings product. These contain no personal data.

Data retention

• Individual test results are retained for 12 months from the date of the test.
• Account data is retained for as long as your account is active.
• Aggregated ranking data (daily medians per country/ISP) is retained indefinitely.
• After account deletion, associated test results are removed within 30 days.

Cookies

We use a single session cookie (session) to maintain your login state. We do not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or third-party analytics cookies. Anonymous sessions use a short-lived cookie to display your most recent test result — this expires when you close your browser.

Your rights

You have the right to:

• Access: request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
• Correction: update your display name and email address from your account settings.
• Deletion: delete your test history from the dashboard, or request complete account and data deletion by contacting us.
• Portability: request an export of your test results in JSON or CSV format.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the date at the top of this page. Material changes will be communicated to registered users via email.
