Why You Should Test Your AT&T Fiber Speed
AT&T Fiber promises fast, symmetrical internet speeds — meaning your upload and download speeds should be roughly equal. But what you're paying for and what you're actually getting aren't always the same thing. How to Test Your AT&T Fiber Speed Accurately
Step 1: Set Up for an Accurate Test
Before you run a test, take a few steps to make sure the results are reliable. Bad test conditions lead to misleading numbers.
- Use a wired connection. Plug an Ethernet cable directly from your AT&T gateway into your computer. Wi-Fi adds interference and bottlenecks that hide your true speed.
- Close other apps. Shut down streaming, downloads, cloud backups, and video calls. Any background traffic will eat into your test results.
- Disconnect other devices. If possible, temporarily disconnect phones, tablets, and smart home devices from your network.
- Use a modern device. Older laptops with 100 Mbps Ethernet ports physically can't show speeds above 100 Mbps. Make sure your computer has a gigabit Ethernet port.

Download and upload numbers tell part of the story, but they don't tell all of it. A connection can show 900 Mbps and still feel laggy if other metrics are bad.
Ping and Latency
Ping measures how long it takes a small piece of data to travel from your device to a server and back. On AT&T Fiber, you should see ping values between 3–15 ms. That's excellent. Jitter is the variation in your ping over time. If your ping bounces between 5 ms and 50 ms, that inconsistency causes problems — especially for video calls and gaming. On fiber, jitter should stay below 3 ms. Run a jitter test to measure yours.
Packet Loss
Packet loss happens when pieces of data never arrive at their destination. Even 1% packet loss can cause noticeable stuttering in video calls and online games. On a healthy AT&T Fiber connection, packet loss should be 0%. You can check yours with a packet loss test.
What to Do If Your Speeds Are Low
Check Your Equipment
AT&T's BGW320 gateway is the standard unit for most fiber customers. It supports Wi-Fi 6 and has a built-in 1 Gbps Ethernet port. Here's the thing: if you're on the 2 GIG or 5 GIG plan, a single gigabit Ethernet port won't show you the full speed. You'd need a device with a 2.5 Gbps or 10 Gbps Ethernet port, or you'd need to use Wi-Fi 6E.
Also, check that your Ethernet cable is Cat 5e or Cat 6. Old Cat 5 cables max out at 100 Mbps.
Improve Your Wi-Fi
If you're testing over Wi-Fi and seeing low speeds, the problem might not be AT&T — it might be your wireless setup. Try these fixes:
- Move closer to your gateway or router.
- Switch from the 2.4 GHz band to the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band. The 5 GHz band is faster but has shorter range.
- Remove physical obstacles like thick walls and metal objects between you and the router.
- Consider adding AT&T's Wi-Fi extenders or switching to a mesh system.
