What NBN Speed Tests Actually Measure
If you're on the NBN (National Broadband Network) in Australia, you've probably wondered whether you're getting the speeds you're paying for. Running a speed test is the fastest way to find out. But the numbers on your screen can be confusing if you don't know what they mean.
An NBN speed test measures three main things: download speed, upload speed, and ping (also called latency). Download speed tells you how fast data arrives at your device — it affects streaming, browsing, and downloading files. Upload speed measures how fast you can send data out, which matters for video calls, cloud backups, and uploading photos. Ping measures the delay between your device and the test server, shown in milliseconds (ms).
There's also jitter, which is how much your ping bounces around during the test. High jitter means your connection is inconsistent. You can check this separately with a jitter test.
NBN Speed Tiers Explained
The NBN doesn't give everyone the same speed. Your internet provider sells you a plan based on one of several speed tiers. Each tier has a maximum download and upload speed. Here's what they look like:

Notice the "Typical Evening Download" column. That's the speed most people actually get between 7 pm and 11 pm, when the network is busiest. Australian providers are required to advertise this number, not just the maximum. So if your NBN 50 plan says "typical evening speed of 43 Mbps," getting 40 Mbps at 9 pm is normal.
Why You Might Not Hit the Maximum
Your speed tier is a ceiling, not a guarantee. Several things eat into your actual speeds: network congestion during peak hours, the quality of your modem/router, Wi-Fi interference, and the type of NBN connection to your home. We'll cover that next.
Your NBN Connection Type Changes Everything
Not all NBN connections are built the same. The technology running to your house has a big impact on what speeds you can actually reach. Here are the main types:
FTTP (Fibre to the Premises)
This is the gold standard. Fibre optic cable runs all the way to your house. FTTP supports every speed tier, including NBN 1000. FTTC (Fibre to the Curb)
Fibre runs to a small box on the street near your home. The last stretch uses your existing copper phone line. FTTC can handle up to NBN 100 reliably, and many users also get solid NBN 250 performance. It's a good setup overall.
FTTN (Fibre to the Node)
This is where things get tricky. Fibre only goes to a street cabinet (node), which could be hundreds of metres from your house. The rest is old copper. The further you are from the node, the slower your speeds. If you're more than 400 metres away, you might struggle to reach NBN 50 speeds consistently. Some FTTN users can't even sync at 100 Mbps. HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial)
This uses the same cable as old pay-TV networks. HFC can handle up to NBN 250 for most users, and NBN 1000 in some areas. It's generally reliable, but shared neighbourhood bandwidth can cause slowdowns during peak times.
Fixed Wireless and Satellite
If you're in a rural area, you might be on fixed wireless (max NBN 75 or NBN 100 depending on your area) or satellite (Sky Muster, with typical speeds around 12–25 Mbps). Satellite users will also see high ping — often 600 ms or more — because the signal has to travel to space and back. Check your ping if you suspect this is affecting your experience.
How to Read Your NBN Speed Test Results
You've run a speed test. Now what? Here's how to interpret each number.
Download Speed
Compare your result to your plan's typical evening speed, not the maximum. If you're on NBN 50 and your provider promises a typical evening speed of 43 Mbps, anything from 35 to 50 Mbps is fine. If you're consistently getting below 30 Mbps, something's wrong.
Upload Speed

Ping and Jitter
For most NBN connections (not satellite), your ping should be between 5 ms and 30 ms. If it's over 50 ms, there could be a routing issue with your provider. Jitter should stay under 5 ms. Higher jitter causes choppy video calls and laggy gaming.
Testing Tips for Accurate Results
- Use a wired connection. Plug an Ethernet cable directly from your router to your computer. Wi-Fi adds interference and can cut your speed in half.
- Close other apps and devices. Pause downloads, stop streaming, and disconnect other devices if possible. Any device using bandwidth will affect your result.
- Test at different times. Run tests in the morning, afternoon, and evening. If speeds drop sharply between 7 pm and 11 pm, your provider may not have enough bandwidth (called CVC — Connectivity Virtual Circuit) for your area.
- Run multiple tests. A single test can be a fluke. Run at least three and look at the average.
Why Your Results Don't Match Your Plan

Wi-Fi Is the #1 Culprit
Most people test over Wi-Fi. On a good day, Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) might give you 200–300 Mbps at close range. But walk to another room, add a wall or two, and you could drop to 30–50 Mbps. Wi-Fi 6 routers do better, but walls, microwaves, and neighbouring networks still cause interference. Always test with an Ethernet cable to rule this out.
Your Router Is the Bottleneck
The router your provider gave you might be cheap. Many ISP-supplied routers struggle with plans above NBN 50. If you're on NBN 100 or higher, consider buying a quality third-party router. Look for Wi-Fi 6 support and gigabit Ethernet ports.
CVC Congestion
CVC (Connectivity Virtual Circuit) is the bandwidth your internet provider buys from NBN Co to serve all their customers in your area. If they haven't bought enough, everyone in your neighbourhood shares a limited pipe during peak hours. Your Technology Type Limits You
As covered above, FTTN connections have hard physical limits based on copper line distance and quality. No amount of router upgrades will fix this. You can request an NBN technology upgrade in some cases, but it depends on availability in your area.
What to Do With Your Results
Once you have clear, wired test results across multiple times of day, you can take action:
- Compare to your plan. If your results are consistently more than 20% below your plan's typical evening speed, contact your provider. They may need to investigate or increase CVC in your area.

- Request a line check. If you're on FTTN and speeds are way below what your distance should allow, ask your provider to lodge a fault with NBN Co. Copper lines can degrade over time.
Understanding your NBN speed test results comes down to knowing your plan, your connection type, and how to test properly. Run your tests over Ethernet, test at peak hours, and compare the numbers to your plan's typical evening speed — not the maximum.
